Shatter, Harden or Shine
Hello hello!
I was reading about pottery and I would like to share something I realized, with all of you!
A lump of clay does not look like much. It is soft, shapeless, and easy to overlook. But once it goes into a kiln, something permanent happens. The fire does not simply heat it. It decides what the clay will become.
That is why clay is such a great symbol of hardship. Difficulty does not only test us. It reveals what was already there, then leaves us changed.
There are three ways clay comes out of the kiln.
If clay still holds trapped air or hidden moisture, the heat expands what is inside until the piece breaks apart. The fire is not the problem. The weakness was already there. The fire simply found it.
People can be like that.
Old wounds, fear, denial, grief that was never faced. These things stay hidden while life is calm. Then we face tough times, pressure builds, and the places we ignored begin to crack.
People do not always fall apart because they are weak. Sometimes they fall apart because they carried something unseen for too long. What we refuse to face in peaceful times, rarely disappears. It waits.
Some clay survives the kiln without breaking. It comes out hard and permanent in form of a brick.
A brick is useful, and strong. But it is finished. It cannot be reshaped. It lets no light through. Some people survive difficult times this way.
They become harder, more guarded, less willing to trust or feel. They tell themselves they are fine because nothing reaches them anymore. That is not always strength. Sometimes it is the decision never to bend again.
The same fire can produce something very different.
Clay that has been prepared with care comes out as porcelain. It is strong, but not heavy. Thin enough for light to pass through. Strike it gently, and it rings instead of thudding.
The fire did not destroy it. The fire completed it. This is the kind of strength worth aiming for.
Not avoiding tough times. Not surviving by shutting down. But allowing the fire to burn away what was never meant to last, while what remains becomes clearer, steadier, and more alive.
Porcelain is not clay that escaped the fire. It is clay that was ready for it.
Prepare before the fire.
We cannot choose when difficulty comes. We can choose what we carry into it.
Addressing conversations, facing old wounds before they are forced open. This is the quiet work that makes people stronger long before anyone notices.
Do not confuse hardness with resilience.
If a difficult season leaves you unable to trust, unable to feel, or unable to let people close, pay attention. Strength stays open. Rigidity only looks strong from a distance.
Let some things burn away.
Clay loses part of itself in the kiln. So do we.
Some fears, some pride, some versions of ourselves were never meant to survive every season. Let them go.
Trust what the fire is doing.
No piece of clay knows what it is becoming while it is still in the kiln.
We rarely do either. So keep doing the quiet work. Stay honest. Stay open. Keep reaching toward people instead of away from them.
The shape of the finished piece only becomes clear after the fire has passed. The fire will come. It always does.
What it leaves behind depends less on how hot it burns than on what was already taking shape within us.
